John Gould (1804 - 1881) was arguably the greatest and most prolific publisher of ornithological works in the world. Gould spent 19 months in Australia collecting specimens of over 600 birds including 300 previously unknown species and returned to England in 1841. Between 1840 and 1848, Gould produced 36 instalments, comprising 681 hand-coloured lithographs, for subscribers.
