John Miller (Johannes Sebastian Mueller) was born in Nuremberg, then the centre of German natural-history printing, and worked under the patronage of Dr Christoph Jacob Trew. Miller moved to England in 1744. He is best remembered for this work which was published in 1776 - 77. Only plants of which living specimens were available were used, as Miller wished to show both the detail of the fruiting parts and the colour as accurately as possible.
Linnaeus considered the work "more beautiful and more accurate than any that had been seen since the world began".
Miller's son, James, helped in the task of working up sketches made by Sydney Parkinson on Capt. Cook's voyage of the Endeavour. ProvenanceExtracted from a book previously owned by Andy Warhol and sold at Sotheby's, New York auction in 1988.
