Besler

Besler was born in 1561 and died in 1629.  Hortus Eystettensis was published at Eichstatt near Nuremberg in 1613, under the patronage of Johann Conrad von Gemmingen, Bishop of Eichstatt, in whose garden most of the plants were grown.  Besler worked on the project for sixteen years, employing up to six engravers.  The florilgium is widely acknowledged as one of the great treasures of botanical literature.
